One small step when your mood is low

With Team Abantu

Using small, planned activities to lift low mood.

Based on: NHS: Low mood, sadness and depression

Transcript

When mood is low, waiting until you feel like doing things often means waiting a long time. Doing a small thing first can help the feeling follow.

Pick one small activity for today. Something you used to enjoy, something that gives a sense of achievement, or something that connects you with someone.

Make it small enough that it feels possible. A ten minute walk. Texting a friend. Washing one set of dishes.

Decide when you will do it, and write it down.

Afterwards, notice how you felt, even if the change was small.

If low mood lasts more than two weeks, or you have thoughts of harming yourself, please speak to your GP or call NHS 111. In an emergency, call 999.
